Some of the most meaningful ways to serve happen right here at St. James. Our Hospitality & Campus Volunteers help create a church that feels welcoming, cared for, and ready for everyone who walks through our doors.
Whether you're a people person who loves greeting guests, someone who enjoys serving a meal, or you'd rather lend a hand behind the scenes, there's a place for you. Opportunities include Ushers & Greeters, the Welcome Desk, Funeral Hospitality, Wednesday Night Dinner, Guest Care, and Campus Communications.
Many of these roles are flexible and can fit a variety of schedules and interests. A friendly face, a thoughtfully prepared space, or a helping hand may seem small—but together, they're what make St. James feel like home.
Ushers & Greeters: Ushers and greeters help create a warm and welcoming experience for everyone who comes to St. James. From greeting guests and members to assisting during worship, this team helps people feel at home and connected. It’s also a great way for new members to meet others and get involved. Welcome Desk: Help make St. James a welcoming place throughout the week! Welcome Desk volunteers greet visitors, answer the phone, help people find their way, answer questions, and connect people with staff or ministries. Volunteers can serve a regular morning or afternoon each week or sign up as a substitute when needed.
Funeral Hospitality: Help care for families during times of loss by providing food for funeral receptions, assisting with setup and serving, or helping with other hospitality needs. Volunteers can serve in ways that fit their availability, whether that means preparing food, dropping it off, or helping at the reception.
Guest Care: Help us care for our guests and church family by keeping our restrooms welcoming and well stocked with complimentary items such as tissues, feminine products, hairspray, and other personal care essentials. This is an easy, flexible way to serve behind the scenes during the week.
Wednesday Night Dinner Team: Help make our Wednesday night gatherings welcoming and enjoyable by serving dinner to our church family. Volunteers help with setup, serving, and cleanup while enjoying fellowship and a meal together.
Campus Communications: Help keep St. James welcoming and informed by updating signs and information throughout the church. Work with our Creative Director, Alison, on signage and visual communication. Flexible weekday opportunities are available based on your schedule.

Make an Impact On and Off the Court
Every winter, more than 250 children come through our doors for Upward Basketball. For many families, it's their first connection to St. James. Together, we have the opportunity to create an environment where every child feels encouraged, valued, and loved.
Whether you're coaching a team, refereeing a game, keeping score, greeting families, serving in the concession stand, or helping behind the scenes, every volunteer plays an important role in making Upward a positive experience. You don't have to be a basketball expert—just someone who enjoys encouraging kids and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
Upward is about more than basketball. It's about building confidence, forming relationships, sharing Christ's love, and making a lasting impact on children and families in our community. No matter your skills or experience, there's a place for you on the team.

SERVE LOCALLY
under the bridge
Twice a month, on the first and second Monday evening of the month, a team of St. James volunteers prepare, and serve a meal to the homeless in downtown Little Rock. This is done in conjunction with Canvas Community, a downtown Little Rock UMC church community, focused on serving the unsheltered neighbors in the area .
serving at our house
On the second Monday of every month, various small groups from St. James take responsibility for serving dinner to about 100 residents of Our House Shelter. Our House provides a pathway out of homelessness for families and individuals in central Arkansas.
project transformation
Each summer, volunteers read one to one with children, one morning per week, at a Project Transformation summer day camp. The camp is for elementary students in grades 1-5, focusing on literacy and social-emotional development. Project Transformation operates an eight-week program with campuses in Pine Bluff and Little Rock.
step encouragers program
Encouragers spend time with selected students at Fulbright Elementary, one day per week, during the school year. They work on reading and math skills with students, under the guidance of a facilitator, as well as just spending time with the child. This program is faith based, and works on the philosophy that a one-on-one relationship, with a caring adult, can make a positive difference in the life of a child who may be struggling.

guatemala medical mission trip
Each year, St. James sends a mission team to Guatemala to partner with Impacto Ministry, a local organization dedicated to transforming communities through faith, education, and service. Our teams work side-by-side with Impacto staff and local families to share God’s love in tangible ways.
what do we do in guatemala?
- Dental and Medical Clinics: Provide care and relief to those with limited access to healthcare.
- Building and Repair Projects: Help construct homes and community spaces that make daily life safer and more stable.
- Children’s Ministry & Outreach: Share joy through Vacation Bible School, crafts, games, and spiritual connection. We plan to further expand our outreach in Children's and Community Ministries in 2026!
- Community Engagement: Build lasting relationships with local families through fellowship and shared experiences.
who can join the trip to guatemala?
This trip is open to families and individuals ages 10 & up— no special skills are required, just a heart to serve! Each person brings unique gifts that make a difference, whether that’s swinging a hammer, offering a smile, or simply showing up with love and compassion.

Serving in Guatemala is more than a trip — it’s a life-changing experience. You’ll see God at work in powerful ways, form deep bonds with teammates and new friends, and return home with a renewed sense of purpose and gratitude.
